A bearing is a measurement, not a guess.
A bearing is a direction taken from a fixed reference. Anyone standing in the same place with the same instrument gets the same reading. That is where the name comes from, and it is what the mark records.
The mark is a compass rose reduced to a single line, struck at 045° from its centre — the reference, and the decision taken against it. Same instrument, same reading, every time, which is what a governed system owes the people who rely on it.
And the cuttlefish?

The Giant Australian Cuttlefish, Sepia apama, is a local. It lives along the coast our footer coordinates sit on and it is the largest cuttlefish in the world. It reads its surroundings and changes its skin to match them in a fraction of a second; it has three hearts and blue-green blood; and it navigates by polarised light that we cannot see at all.
We wanted a name from home, and we wanted one that stood for reading the situation in front of you faster than anything else in the water. Local, adaptive, hard to surprise. That is the company we are trying to build.
